S. Carolina Amateur: Carson Young rallies for win
ELGIN, S.C. (Aug. 4, 2013) -- With a final round score of 66 and a four day total of twelve under par 272, Carson Young is the SCGA’s 82nd Amateur Champion.
Starting the day seven shots behind third round leader Ben Fogler, the incoming Clemson University freshman made his statement early in the round by making birdie on three of the first four holes. The 18 year old managed to complete his front nine with no bogies and the rest pars to turn at 32. Fogler, who had managed to hold at least a share of the lead throughout the entire tournament, was not to be outdone, making birdies on holes 4 & 6 to maintain a significant lead. Fogler made his first slip of the day on the converted par four 9th hole, making bogey.
The tide turned when the groups made their way to the backside. On the 10th hole, Young made birdie to get within four shots of the lead. While Fogler recorded pars on holes 10, 11, and 12, he stumbled on the par four 13th, making double bogey. Playing one group ahead, Carson Young finished his final six holes at one under par. A Young birdie on the par five 17th proved decisive as Fogler and playing competitor Will Murphy, who also crept to within a shot of the lead, both failed to record a birdie on the back nine.
This is Young’s first SCGA Major Championship, but the Pendleton native holds titles in many other National Junior events and the Carolinas Amateur Championship.
