S. Carolina Amateur: Fogler takes lead
ELGIN, S.C. (Aug. 2, 2013) -- With his second consecutive score of five under par 66, home favorite Ben Fogler holds a four shot lead heading into the third round of the SCGA Amateur Championship at ten under par 132.

Fogler, a rising sophomore at Vanderbilt University and a member of the host club, The Members Club at Woodcreek, made a total of nine birdies through his round to finish at five under par for the day. The highlights of the birdie barrage were opening birdies on holes 10 & 11 and 1 & 2 along with closing birdies on the tough 9th and 18th holes.

In second place at 136 is Carson Young, a Pendleton native, after shooting a score of 70 for a two day total of 136. Tied for third at 137 is Blythewood’s Bryce Howell, Kamito Harai from Summerville and Jarrett Swan of Mt. Pleasant. First round co-leader, Jon Mathias, is six shots back at 138.

The low score of the tournament came from redshirt sophomore Stephen Behr with a score of 64. Starting on hole #10, the Clemson Tiger shot nines of 34-30 to help boost him into a tie for 12th place.

A total of 70 players made the cut at 147 or better. Saturday pairings will begin at 7.30 a.m. off of #1 tee. The 2013 SCGA Amateur Championship is being played at The Members Club at Woodcreek on the par 71 – 6,942 yard Tom Fazio layout in Elgin, SC. The field consists of 134 players that were either exempt or qualified at one of three sites. There was a cut to the low 70 and ties after the first two days of play. The Amateur Championship is one of 19 Major Championships conducted by the South Carolina Golf Association and is in its 82nd year of existence.

The Palmetto State’s finest amateur golfers square off in their annual youth-vs.-experience battle in the South Carolina Golf Association’s Amateur Championship. The 72 hole event will include the top golfers in South Carolina who have either qualified for their position or earned an exempt status through another accomplishment. This Championship brings out the best in all participants and includes former Champions such as Lucas Glover, DJ Trahan and Bill Haas.
