NY State Amateur: Stasiak prevails
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. (July 25, 2013) -- Set the scene: Late afternoon. Round 4 of the 2013 NYS Men’s Amateur Championship. Matthew Stasiak (Fox Valley Club) and Victor Fox (Normanside Country Club) are tied for the lead at the beginning of the seventeenth. Stasiak makes a heart wrenching double bogey on seventeen while Fox (Normanside Country Club) makes par. They arrive on the eighteenth tee; Stasiak is two strokes behind Fox with one hole to play and a State Title on the line.
Pan In: Stasiak & Fox tee off. Stasiak finds the green in two after what he describes as his “best drive of the entire week”. Fox has an unfortunate tee shot and finds his drive in the left-side fairway bunker. Fox lands his second shot out of the bunker thirty yards short of the green only to pitch his third shot over the green by a couple feet. Fox lands his fourth shot on the green; a short chip shot that nearly grazed the hole only to stop 8 feet past it.
Stasiak sinks his birdie putt leaving Fox with the opportunity to make bogey and force a playoff. Fox surveys his line, steadies himself over the ball, makes his putt and misses left. He takes a double bogey; his second for the round and tournament overall.
Feelings of heartbreak and elation are felt among the crowd as Stasiak and Fox shake hands and congratulate each other on a job well done.
Stasiak finished the Championship with a four-day total of 4-under par 284 (71-72-72-69). Fox finished the Championship in second overall with a four-day total of 3-under par 285 (68-71-72-74).
Alas, the Ganson Depew trophy will not return to Captial Area for at least another year and the Capital area will wait with bated breath to produce another State Amateur Champion.
The New York State Golf Association would like to thank all of the participants, the volunteers, and especially the Schuyler Meadows Club for an incredibly memorable Championship.
