FRESNO, CA (April 26, 2005) —This one had been on his mind for four years. Robert Thompson of Merced GCC accomplished his first goal of the year by holding on Tuesday to win the 44th annual Northern California Golf Association Senior Amateur Championship at Fort Washington GCC.

Thompson, last year's CGA (State) Amateur champion, started the day with eight players within three strokes of his lead. The Merced member took advantage of great ball striking and played steady golf down the stretch to finish 70-74--144, two strokes ahead of his closest pursuers. Thompson used deft touch around the greens to navigate the 6,588-yard layout.

"I knew I had to shoot 74 or better today to win," remarked Thompson of his victory. "I felt pressure down the stretch because I've had my sights set on this tournament for years." At the start of this season, Thompson set goals to win the Senior Championship and the Senior Points title. Last year he battled until the end and came in second behind Mike Butler of The Olympic Club in the race for Senior Player of the Year. The 58-year-old intends to write a different script this year.

"I am thrilled right now," said Thompson. "This is what I came here to accomplish."

Serrano CC's Michael Davis captured second place honors after a par on the second playoff hole. Dave Parsons of Club Shakespeare, who played alongside of Thompson in the final group, had to settle for third place alone. Parsons was only two strokes out of the lead with nine holes to play, but was unable to get any closer the rest of the day.

Dick Dallagiacomo of Tierra Oaks won the Super Senior division (65 and older) with 75-76 for a 151 total. Robert Frey (74-80) of De Laveaga GC was three strokes back in second place.
