Maine Amateur: Jones holds on for win
MANCHESTER, Maine (July 11, 2013) -- Tommy Stirling from Sable Oaks birdied the final two holes at Augusta Country Club to pull within two shots, but Ricky Jones was able to hold off the charge to capture his third Maine Amateur Championship Thursday. After a 45-minute rain delay around noon, the field returned to the golf course to complete the event.

Jones had taken a six-shot lead into the final round and played steadily with 15 pars, two bogeys and a birdie to end up at six-under 204.

But Stirling started the day with four straight threes -- including three birdies -- to pull close. The 20-year-old from Gorham had the day's lowest round with a 67 to finish second. In all, Stirling made seven birdies in the round. He finished the tournament at four-under 206.

Jones, who has been the Amateur runner-up for two of the last three years, will now head to the USGA Public Links Championship in Virginia for his 15th USGA championship and his chance to represent Maine on the national stage.

In third place with the only other sub-par round of the day at 69 was JJ Harris from Bath. Harris birdied his last hole as an amateur for the red number. He and Ryan Gay will both turn pro tomorrow at a Pro-Am event at Bath Golf Club. Harris' three-day total was a steady two-ver 212.

Gay, who has three amateur titles of his own, wrapped up his amateur career in a tie for fourth with Sam Grindle from Island Country Club on Deer Isle. The two finished at 213.
