LANSDOWNE, Virg. (July 10, 2013) –– Local Bill Engel, 66, of Alexandria shot a second round best 2-under-par 70 to earn medalist honors in the 65-69 age division as stroke play qualifying concluded today at the 19th Virginia State Golf Association Super Senior Amateur Championship being conducted at The Golf Club at Lansdowne’s Robert Trent Jones Course.

Engel completed qualifying at 3-under 141 to earn low qualifying honors for match play which begins on Thursday. He opened with 1-under 71, returned the low two rounds of qualifying and was the only player to post two rounds in red numbers in the division.

Event rookie Keith Compton, 65, of Reston (2-over 74), Donald Meyer, 68, of Washington, D.C., (1-over 73) and Jon Abbett, 65, of McLean (2-over 74) are the two through four seeds, respectively, in the division with 4-over 148 aggregates. Former VSGA Senior Amateur champion John Cuomo, 65, of Richmond (2-over 74) is the fifth low qualifier for match play at 5-over 149.

In the 70-74 age bracket, Arlington’s Peter Jacobi, 70,who opened with 3-under 69, continued his strong play, carding a second day 71 to claim qualifying medalist honors in the division at 4-under 140. Jacobi won last year’s 65-69 age division at the event.

Richmond’s Stan Fischer, 71, had even-par 72 and was the second low qualifier (2-under 142) for match play. Fellow 70-year-olds Robert Murphy (Reston) and Marvin Taylor of Roanoke (second round 2-under 70) completed qualifying at 2-over 146 to earn the third and fourth seeds, respectively. David King, 71, of Potomac Falls carded even-par 72 on day two and completes the top five seeds (3-over 147)

In the 75 and over category, Harry Cain, 75, of Williamsburg posted a second round even-par 72, accounting for the low score in the age division; he finished qualifying at 4-over 148. Cain claimed two straight titles in the 70-74 age category before turning 75 last September.

Northern Virginian William Stallings, 77, of McLean (11-over 155), Bob Moyers, 77, of New Market (14-over 158) and local James Burton, 76, of Aldie (15-over 159) were the other match play qualifiers in the age bracket.

Following Wednesday’s second round of stroke play qualifying, eight players qualified for the match play field in both the 65-69 and 70-74 age divisions, while four players made match play in the 75 and over division.

Match play qualifiers in the 65-69 and 70-74 age groups will play quarterfinal and semifinal round matches on Thursday, July 11, followed by final round matches on Friday, July 12. Golfers making match play in the 75 and over division will play one match on Thursday and the final on Friday. Players will only compete with those in their age group.

ABOUT THE Virginia Mid-Senior & Super Senior

36 holes of stroke play qualifying (18 holes per day); the low 8 players advance to match play. The Mid-Senior field is for players aged 60-64, and the Super Senior field is divided into three age groups (65+, 70+ and 75+). Players will only compete against those in their age group. Open to VSGA members who hold an active GHIN number issued by a licensed VSGA Member Club in good standing.
