LONGMONT, Colo. (June 21, 2013) -- Former University of Colorado golfer Derek Fribbs shot a 5-under-par 65 and leads by two after Friday's first round of the 31st and final CGA Public Links Championship at Twin Peaks Golf Course in Longmont.

Fribbs, runner-up in this event two years ago, made seven birdies on Friday, while his only blemish on the card was a double bogey at the 18th hole, his ninth of the day.

The 2008 5A state high school champion, who plays out of Colorado National Golf Club, is two strokes ahead of Brandon Bingaman of Black Canyon Golf Club with two days remaining in the event. Bingaman, a former Colorado Mesa University golfer, made five birdies on Friday, but closed with a bogey.

The only other players under par Friday were two from CommonGround Golf Course: 2012 CGA Player of the Year Steven Kupcho and Matt Porter, who each posted 69.

Defending champion Eric Parish of CommonGround opened with a 73.

The 54-hole tournament will continue through Sunday.

Earlier this month, CGA officials decided to discontinue the CGA Public Links Championship after this year. It will be replaced by a to-be-determined tournament in 2014.
