VANCOUVER, B.C. (June 13, 2013) -- This is getting interesting.
After the second round of play in the 49th Pacific Northwest Senior Men’s Amateur Championship being held at Marine Drive Golf Club in Vancouver, B.C., there are 17 players within 10 strokes of the lead. Richard Jonson of Seattle sits alone in first place at 2-over par, after rounds of 73-71 on the par-71 layout. Jonson, a 5-time club champion from Broadmoor Golf Club, started the day tied for fifth, but his even-par round today that included five birdies and five bogeys was good enough to put himself in front of a field that saw how tough Marine Drive can play.
After yesterday’s first round, only one player, Mark Spooner of West Vancouver, B.C., was under par. There are no players under par after today’s second round. Spooner struggled today on the relatively short par 5s, with a triple-bogey on the 530-yard fifth hole and a bogey on the 500-yard 12th hole, on his way to a 6-over par 77 for a two-day total of 5-over par and now finds himself tied for third, three shots behind Jonson.
Norm Bradley of Kelowna, B.C. is alone in second, two shots back of Jonson.
There are three past champions still in the hunt. Defending champion Tom Brandes of Bellevue, Wash. is three shots back; Larry Daniels of Seattle is four shots back; and Kent Brown is 10 shots back.
In the 4th Pacific Northwest Super Senior Men’s Amateur Championship being held concurrently at Marine Drive, Shelton Washburn of Chimacum, Wash. is in first place, holding a two shot lead over Noel Pumfrey of Victoria, B.C. and a three shot lead over defending champion Gay Davis of Portland.
Mitch Freko of Rancho Mirage, Calif. leads the Open division by three shots going into tomorrow’s final round.
Note: three-time past champion Chris Maletis withdrew prior to the start of the second round.
