TOLEDO, OH (September 20, 2016) -- Auburn has captured the Inverness Intercollegiate at Inverness Club thanks to a 54-hole 9-under tally. The No. 11 Tigers finished three-strokes in front of second place, No. 23 Duke.

Auburn was paced by three players in the top-four. The leading Tiger was Will Long. The senior posted rounds of 73-68-69 to finish 3-under and in third. Long stormed to the finish on Tuesday with four birdies in his last six holes.

Behind Long at 2-under and tied for fourth was redshirt senior Ryan Benton. The 2015 USA Individual tournament champion carded scores of 69-72-70. Benton finished his event in style with a final hole birdie.

Senior Matt Gilchrest also finished tied for fourth at 2-under after beginning the day leading the individual standings. However, a final round 4-over 75 did Gilchrest in. A 2015 All-SEC first teamer, Gilchrest, was still in the mix for medalist honors until he double-bogeyed the 17th.

During the first two rounds Gilchrest posted scores of 64-72. His first round 7-under 64 included five birdies, two eagles and two bogeys.

In a playoff it was Michigan's Nick Carlson claiming medalist honors and the first collegiate title of his career. Carlson, who made a surprise run to the U.S. Amateur semifinals, started the day tied for 14th but shot up the leaderboard with a closing 4-under 67.

Starting his day on the 10th hole, the sophomore bogeyed his opening hole before rebounding with birdies on the next two to reach 1-under. Two more birdies and a bogey followed as Carlson turned for the final nine 2-under-par.

He quickly reached 3-under with a birdie on No. 1 and then moved to 5-under with an eagle on the par-5 8th. He had a chance to win in regulation but a bogey on the 9th dropped him back to 4-under.

Carlson was met in the playoff by Duke junior Jake Shuman. Coming off a tie for second at the ACC Championship last year, Shuman posted a final day 3-under 68 to reach 4-under. Shuman provided some heroics on Tuesday with a hole-in-one on the 12th and then an eagle on the closing hole to tie for the lead.

Overall it was a four bogey, one hole-in-one, three bogey day for Shuman.
