The first California State Open
Golf Championship was played
in 1900 and won by 1899 US
Open Champion Willie Smith.
The tournament was not staged
again until 1915 when the legendary
Hagen claimed the title.
Santa Maria Country Club served as the
longest home to the event from 1957-
The Southern California PGA has staged
championship since 1940 and has given
PGA Professional the opportunity to play
Over the years, the event has served as a
launching pad to many great careers.
with names like Snead, Barber, Cook,
Paulson and Triplett played in the event
their formative years.
The list of past champions include five
different US Open Champions, four PGA
Champions, two British Open Champions
one Masters Champion.
The event has helped to propel the
2003 runner-up Kevin Na and defending
champion Jason Gore who have both
their way onto the PGA Tour.
