In 1977, when the Anaheim City Amateur Golf Tournament was first played, it was produced in conjunction with the celebration of legendary "Dad" Miller's 100th birthday. Henry George "Dad" Miller was the golf pioneer in Anaheim who persuaded the City to build a course, first named Anaheim Municipal in 1961 and later renamed Dad Miller Golf Course. He is also remembered for recording an ace on the 11th hole at Dad Miller at age 93.

The goal of the first tournament was to encourage camaraderie between players at Anaheim's two public golf courses and the golfing community at large. Now, a quarter of a century later, the tournament is considered one of the top amateur tournaments in the Southland.

The City Championship has become so popular that a senior men's event was added in 1999 to round out the series of championship tournaments. In the past, the men's championship field has filled up weeks prior to the 36-hole, two-day event at the City's two courses (Anaheim Hills and Dad Miller).
