The Middle Atlantic Golf Association, originally known as the Golf Association of Maryland and the District of Columbia, is one of the oldest amateur golf organizations in the country. It was founded at an organizational meeting at the Baltimore Country Club (Roland Park) on March 18, 1902, with representatives from Baltimore Country Club (Alexander P. Knapp and Edward H. Bouton), Elkridge Hunt Club (N. Winslow Williams and Josias Pennington), Sudbrook Park Golf Club (Roswell W. Graves and Dr. Herbert Harlan), Maryland Country Club (Thomas J. Lindsay), Chevy Chase Club (Ormsby Horstman), Columbia Country Club (Frederick R. Parks), and Cumberland Country Club (Mr. Boyd). The original objectives were to provide for an amateur championship tournament each year, to afford a convenient means of arranging the dates of the annual tournaments of its members so that they would not conflict, and "to promote generally the interests of golf." The seven charter member clubs were those present at the organization meeting.

Currently, there are approximately 125 member clubs located in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, and Delaware. Many of the member clubs are located in the Baltimore- Washington- Northern Virginia area. There is also a strong presence in the Richmond-Williamsburg corridor. All events are conducted at ‘scratch.’ That is, there are no net prizes. Handicaps are only used to determine eligibility and, in some cases, for flighting purposes. The Amateur Championship, first conducted at Baltimore Country Club (Roland Park) on October 23 - 25, 1902, is one of the oldest such championships in the country. Past champions of the Middle Atlantic Amateur include the following: Roland MacKenzie (three-time Walker Cupper and US Amateur medalist at Oakmont in 1925), George Voigt (three-time Walker Cupper, three-time North & South champion, and US Amateur medalist at Brae Burn in 1928), Davis Love III, Fred Funk, Scott Gump, Deane Beman, Nathaniel Crosby, Martin West III (former Walker Cupper and the best amateur of the past thirty five years from the DC area), William Hyndman, Dale Morey, Ralph Bogart and Bobby Brownell. Bogart and Brownell were the two best amateurs in the region through the forties and fifties as well as one of the foremost four-ball partnerships in postwar American golf, with five victories in the Anderson Memorial at Winged Foot Golf Club.

The Middle Atlantic Amateur has been conducted on the best courses in the region, including Columbia CC, Chevy Chase Club, Congressional CC, The Cascades, Caves Valley GC, the East Course at Baltimore CC, CC of Virginia James River Course, Four Streams GC, Woodmont CC, Woodholme CC, and Farmington CC. Part of the recent tradition of this event is that it is held on the best courses in the region and in the early fall when playing conditions typically are at their best.
