One of the oldest traditional amateur tournaments in the state, the Firecracker has always drawn a talented field. Since 1946, players from all points of Texas have participated in the Firecracker.

In the early days, the tournament was known as the Texas Public Links Golf Association Championship, and then the Austin Golf Association Invitational Championship. In 1950, it became the Fourth of July Championship.

For three years after the Morris Williams Golf Course opened in 1964, the tournament was held there. It returned to Austin Municipal Golf Course, or Lions, as we know it now, in 1967. The name was changed to the Firecracker Golf Festival Championship. It has continued to be played at Lions, and the name has evolved into the Firecracker Open.

Reviewing the list of past champions gives evidence of the talent of the Firecracker's competitors. The P.W. Curry trophy is entrusted annually to the Firecracker Champion.
