CROSSVILLE, Tenn. (July 21, 2012) -- Spring Hill’s Lauren Stratton claimed the 2012 Golf Capital of Tennessee Women’s Open title posting a final round 72 to win the event with a three-round total of 211 (69-70-72), five under par. Starting the final round one stroke behind second round leader, Haley Wilson from Fort Mitchell, Alabama, Stratton’s steady play helped clinch the championship.

Like her previous rounds, Stratton made few mistakes and fought through tough conditions to keep her scorecard free of big numbers. “I wanted to give myself the most birdie opportunities possible—it’s an easy round if you’re always putting for birdie,” said Stratton. Starting her round with an up and down on the first hole, Stratton kept par in her sights as she made her final trek around the Stonehenge Golf Club. Her only bogey of the round came at the par 4 sixth hole, which she immediately made up for with a 3-foot birdie putt on the par 5 eighth hole. “I started a little shaky, but hung through it because I knew it was there,” commented Stratton.

Stratton is a rising senior at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Vanderbilt Head Coach Greg Allen describes Stratton’s game as solid. “Stratton has worked hard the last four to five years and has one of the best golf swings in college golf,” said Coach Allen. “She had a great junior year, and I know she will continue her outstanding play for her final season at Vanderbilt.”

Earlier this summer, Stratton claimed the 2012 Tennessee Amateur Championship title. Vanderbilt now has had three players claim the Tennessee Amateur and Open titles in the same year—Sarah Jacobs in 2003, Kendall Martindale in 2011, and now Lauren Stratton. “It’s great to have girls from Tennessee support the state tournaments and for another Commodore to win both titles,” said Coach Allen.

“It’s an honor to win this event and to have my name engraved on the trophy,” said Stratton. “I’ve played in this tournament for a while, and it’s always a fun, relaxing week because you get to play in front of all these fans that love to watch this event.”

Low professional honors went to Mo Martin from Altadena, California who posted 212 (74-69-69), four under par to finish second behind Stratton and took home $5,000.00.

Many thanks to the City of Crossville, the title sponsor of the Golf Capital of Tennessee Women’s Open, as well as to our host facility, Stonehenge Golf Club, and the many volunteers from the Fairfield Glade Community.
