MADISON, MISS. (June 10, 2012_ - As the 2012 97th State Amateur came to a close the defending champion Clay Homan once again finishes on top, claiming his fourth title. The competition was fierce amongst the 9:10 final group with Grant Goforth and Eddie Brescher III playing alongside Homan.
Goforth started the round four shots behind Homan and closed the gap to one shot on the front nine firing a solid 36, with Brescher only two behind after 9 with an opening 35. Homan kicked it into gear on the back nine birding 10 and finishing strong, birding three of his last four holes to finish with a one under 71 and securing the win. Homan's 71-73-64-71 = 279 put him four shots clear of second place Goforth (283) and five shots of third place, Brescher (284). Homan's win today is his second big one for the year after claiming the Mid Amateur in March.
After the rain yesterday conditions were perfect for round 4, the course perfectly manicured and soft receptive greens made for some great rounds. The low rounds for the day go to Kevin Brady and Wilson Furr both shooting three under 69. In total, fourteen players shot under par in round four.
Many were present for the awards presentation, where several others were recognized. Cory Williamson received the Mike Magee Medalist for his first round posting of 69. The Charles Green Trophy is awarded to the two players who are members of the same club and record the lowest two round totals combined. The winners of this represent Fulton Country Club, Clay Homan and Chad Ramey. Clay Homan successfully defended the Spec Wilson trophy and will be added as the 2012 Mississippi State Amateur Champion.
