Western Intercollegiate: Texas takes 2nd round lead
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (April 14, 2012) -- With four Longhorns finishing among the top 10 after 36 holes of action at the Western Intercollegiate, the No. 1 Texas Men's Golf team holds an eight-stroke lead entering Sunday's final round and is poised to win its seventh tournament of the 2011-12 season.

With the Western Intercollegiate featuring a six-player format with each team counting five individual scores each round, Texas shot a 5-over 355 in round one before following with an even-par 350 in the second round. Stanford (353-360=713) is in second place at 13-over 713.

Following his 2-over 72 in the morning round at Pasatiempo Golf Club, Spieth led the field with a 3-under 67 in the second round. Spieth carded birdies on the eighth, ninth, 13th, first and fourth holes to subset back-to-back bogeys on 15 and 16.

Spieth trails 36-hole leader Justin Shin (New Mexico, 68-69=137) by two strokes and is one stroke behind current runner-up Patrick Rodgers (Stanford, 67-71=138).

Beginning his rounds on the sixth hole, Frittelli carded three birdies in his first four holes during the morning session. His first of three bogeys in the round came on the 10th hole, but another trio of subpars came at 12, 16 and 17 for Frittelli to dip to 5-under through 12 holes. Back-to-back bogeys on the first and second holes - the 14th and 15th of his round - set Frittelli back two strokes to result in the -3 scorecard. Frittelli carded a 3-over 73 in his afternoon round and enters Sunday's finale tied for fourth place at even-par 140. In additional to Frittelli's first-round 67, Moon and Vegas added rounds of 1-over 71 in the morning, while Spieth and junior Cody Gribble contributed a 72 and 74, respectively.
