Reno man scores two aces at U.S. Senior Am Qualifier
SPARKS, NV. (Aug. 15, 2011) -- The odds of making two aces in the same round are nestled somewhere between being struck by lightening and winning a single state lottery.
John Montross of Reno, Nevada, defied those odds yesterday in the USGA Senior Amateur Qualifier at Red Hawk Hill Resort by making a 1 on the 155 yard par-3 5th hole. But he wasn't finished.
After making par on the 160 yard 8th, Montross approached the 227 yard par-3 11th and made another ace, his second of the day and his fifth all-time, all in competition.
On the final par-3, the 152 yard 13th, his marker said "you better make another hole-in-one since I already wrote it down." A bad omen Mr. Montross. A missed green and flubbed chip totaled to a double bogey which led Montross to a final score of 75 that failed to qualify for the Senior Amateur at the Kinloch Golf Club near Richmond, Virginia in September.
The approximate odds as calculated by Golf Digest for making two holes-in-one in the same round are 9,222,500 to 1. Being struck by lightening is roughly 2,650,000 to 1, while winning a single state lottery is 18,000,000 to 1.
