Wentworth Wins Interclub Team Championship

ORLANDO, FL (April 2, 2011) -- Wentworth Golf Club came from behind to win the 2011 Men’s Interclub Team Championship at Grand Cypress Golf Club in Orlando, April 2-3. After six weeks of matches and two rounds of play-offs, Wentworth beat out seven other Regional Champions to be crowned the Men’s Interclub State Champions.

Wentworth Golf Club earned 195 points in the first round to trail by four points heading into the final round. In the final round, Wentworth was lead by Tom Stead and his 36 stabelford points, to help his team finish with 205 points on the day, and a tournament total of 400 points to capture the title by just one point. This is Wentworth’s first Men’s Interclub Championship title. Countryside Country Club finished in second place with 399 points, while Tiger Point Golf and Country Club finished in third place with 394 points.

After two rounds of playoffs, Wentworth Golf Club, in Tarpon Springs, won the West Region. LaCita Golf & Country Club, in Titusville, won the Central Region. The Champions Club at Julington Creek, in Jacksonville, grabbed the title of the Northeast Region. Black Diamond Ranch, from Lecanto, won the Ocala Region. Colony West Country Club, from Tamarac, claimed the Southeast Region title, Forest Glen Golf and Country Club, in Naples, claimed the Southwest Region, Countryside Country Club, in Clearwater, captured the Suncoast Region title, and Tiger Point Golf & Country Club, in Gulf Breeze, captured the Panhandle Region title.

In the State Championship, the six lowest individual net scores (highest net Stableford points) per team count. The team with the highest number of points will be crowned the Interclub State Champions. Net Stableford points are as follows: Double Eagle 5-points, Eagle 4-points, Birdie 3-points, Par 2-points, Bogey 1-point, Double Bogey or higher 0-points.

The Men's Interclub Team Matches began in January and included six weeks of home and away matches, followed by regional play-offs and a State Championship at Grand Cypress Golf Club. Matches are played on Thursday afternoons and utilize full handicaps (18.4 indexes and below) featuring eight players from each team competing against another local club. All competitors play an individual 18-hole match and at the same time, play with a partner from their team in a four-ball match against two players from the opposing team (2-man, best ball).
