GRANTS PASS, ORE. (Wednesday, August 10, 2005) - Despite shooting a score of 6-over-par 80, Marcie Hoover of Troutdale, Ore. narrowly defeated former Oregon Duck and local favorite Johnna Nealy of Grants Pass, Ore. by two strokes at the 36-hole Women's Stroke Play Championship held at Grants Pass Golf Club.

Hoover started the day with a one stroke lead over Washington State's Tracy Broders having scored the only under par round of the tournament, but finished with a 36-hole total of 73-80-153 on the par 74 layout.

Portland State University Golf Coach Felicia Johnston of Tigard, Ore. and former 8-time Oregon amateur champion Mary Budke of Eugene, Ore. were tied for third at just three strokes off the pace.

Nettie Morrison of Bend, Ore. had the low round of the day among all players shooting 80-76-156 to easily earn her fourth Senior Division title.

"The Women's Stroke Play showcases the best women players in Oregon and SW Washington," commented OGA Executive Director Jim Gibbons. The tournament is open to all female amateur golfers who are members of the Oregon Golf Association, and features Gross and Net contests for both the Open and Senior division (for women 50 years of age or older). Players such as Marcia Fisher and Mary Budke often opt to play in the Open Division in order to receive player of the year points and compete to represent Oregon at the U.S. State Team Championships.
