Bay Regional: Title Goes to Philippine National Champ

BERKELEY, Calif. (August 5, 2007) -- The final foursome of the Bay Regional Championship at Berkeley's Tilden Park had three players from the Philippine National Team and Scott Hardy of Pleasant Hill as the 4th. Trailing all three players (and the leader by 5) Hardy made a run for the title with the round of the day, a 68 on the tricky Tilden Park layout.

Hardy knew the title went to Jay Bayron of the Philippines (who fired a blazing 65 on Saturday) but didn't know he was three back.

"Oh, I was five shots back," joked Hardy. "I shouldn't have given you such a big lead."

Bayron shot a consistent 35-35 round of even par 70, capped off by a birdie on the last hole.

The temperature on Sunday was an amazing 40 degrees colder than Saturday's scorching 98 degrees. Bayron preferred the heat.

"Cold, foggy, and windy," said the 2006 Philippine Amateur champion, when describing his day.

In third place at 213 was Ferdinand Aunzo of The Philippines, while Chris Moreno-Hunt of Berkeley tied Michael Alejandro of The Philippines at 214 for fourth place.

Curtis Abbey of Portola Valley aced the fourth hole, a 143-yarder, with an 8-iron.

"I hit my best shot of the day there," said Abbey, who bought a few pitchers of beer for the players. "It landed 5 yards past the hole and spun back in."

Al Richardson won a cardoff with Barry Bhangoo for the Net title. Both players finished tied at 8-over 218.

Richardson was presented with a trophy, his proshop credit for the tournament, and a set of Bridgestone GC-Mid irons and hybrid club which he won in the recent amateurgolf.com contest.

"I didn't tell you when you called me on Wednesday evening that my birthday was Thursday," said Richardson. "It's been a pretty good week."

Although he went out in 49 on the front nine, Richardson played very solid golf on the back nine, including a 6-par run that got him right back on track.

"I was chipping like a madman," he said.

The Senior Division concluded on Saturday with Jim Williams defending his title at 10-over 150. (Williams' son Bryant, who plays for the University of Pennsylvania, made the Championship cut and finished tied for 9th.)

A note of thanks goes out to Tilden Park for hosting this event, and to the Tilden Park Men's Club for entrusting its future success to amateurgolf.com. Final results follow, from the 6294 yard, Par 70 Tilden Park Golf Course:
