Canterbury Cup: Jim Bucholz and Keith Blythe claim title

CLEVELAND, OH (June 28, 2016) -- Jim Bucholz and Keith Blythe led after the first round, before falling behind on the second day, only to rally and win the Canterbury Cup on the third day. The duo of Bucholz and Blythe fired a final round 6-under 65 at Canterbury Golf Club to finish the week 6-under and ahead by three shots.

The week at Canterbury Golf Club consists of three best-ball rounds and on the second day a nine-hole alternate shot round. Bucholz and Blythe played exceptionally well in the best-ball rounds, putting together under-par scores of 71-69-65. However, they slipped up in the alternate shot event shooting a 41, which nearly cost them.

Jeffrey Knox and Steve Paramore finished in second place after leading by two-strokes prior to the start of the final 18-holes. Knox and Paramore played well with a 2-under 70 on Tuesday but it wasn't enough.

The team's of Bryan Montgomery and James Thompson; Jay Danzi and Mackenzie Hurd tied for a distant third at 5-over. Garrett Morrison and Thomas Beckett were 6-over and in fifth.

In the Senior Division six team's finished under-par with Gordon Rees and Skip Runnels posting 10-under to win by four. The Super Senior Division winner was Dr. Rob Hess and Ronnie Tumlin at 4-under and 12 clear of the field.

ROUND TWO RECAP

After 18 more holes of best-ball play and nine holes of alternate shot competition the team of Jeff Knox and Steve Paramore have taken a two-stroke lead at the Canterbury Cup. Heading into the final day Knox and Paramore are presently the only team under-par as they sit at 1-under-par.

Knox, best known for his role as marker at the Masters, and Paramore have put together rounds of 74-69-36.

First round leaders, Jim Bucholz and Keith Blythe are alone in second place at 2-over. The duo started the day 1-under and played well in the second of best-ball round with a 69 but struggled in the nine-hole alternate shot format shooting a 41.

Three teams --Bryan Montgomery and James Thompson; Fred DiSanto and Larry Joseph; Garrett Morrison and Thomas Beckett -- are all tied for third at 6-over.

The Senior Division is being paced by Don Erickson and John Benson who are 8-under and ahead by three-strokes. Jim Durr and Mark Guadagni will begin the final day of play in second place at 5-under while two other teams are 4-under and tied for third.

In the Super Senior Division Dr. Rob Hess and Ronnie Tumlin are 1-under and a comfortable eight shots in front of the rest of the field.

When play resumes on Tuesday the format will return to 18-holes of best-ball play.

ROUND ONE RECAP

Playing in a best-ball format Jim Bucholz and Keith Blythe have grabbed the first round lead at the 2016 Canterbury Cup. The duo shot an opening round 1-under 71 and they will take a one-stroke lead into the second round.

Bucholz and Blythe might have taken an early lead but a large group of contenders are hot on their heels. Jay Danzi and Mackenzie Hurd posted an even-par 72 in the first round and they sit in solo second place, one-stroke back.

Two teams are tied for third at 2-over while another five duos share fifth place following a 2-over 74 first day.

In the Senior Division three teams are tied for first place following 3-under 69's. The group includes Allen Peake and Keith Holmes; Carl Nanni and Chris Kelos; John Spengler and Mark Nickerson.

A trio of team's sit one shot back at 2-under and tied for fourth. The pairings include Jim Durr and Mark Guadagni; Bob Fairchild and Brian Sparrow; Don Erickson and John Benson.

Two additional team's are 1-under and tied for seventh.

ABOUT THE Picard Cup

The Picard Cup is a Major two- man tournament that draws a field of accomplished players from all over the country. 54 holes over two days.

Format:
Round One – Better Ball of Partners
Round Two – Alternate Shot
Round Three – Better Ball of Partners

The tournament will have two divisions: Mid-Amateur (ages 25-54) and Senior (ages 55+). The difference in partner handicaps cannot exceed 4 for Mid-Ams, and 6 for Seniors.

The tournament honors Henry Picard, the Head Golf Professional at Canterbury for 25 years. Aside from his many championship victories he was a Masters Tournament and PGA Champion. His Masters Jacket along with other memorabilia is presented in the Picard Lounge at Canterbury.

Canterbury is an older traditional golf course that has hosted several professional major championships, including two U.S. Opens and a PGA Championship as well as two U.S. Amateur championships.
