Best of the Weekend: Fred Wedel wins the Northeast Amateur and more

(June 27, 2016) -- The headline of the weekend came from Rumford, RI where Fred Wedel came from behind and won the Northeast Amateur. It was a thrilling Saturday finish at Wannamoisett Country Club as Wedel finished 6-under and hung on to win by a stroke.

In Formby, England the European's captured the Palmer Cup 18.5-11.5. Europe carried a 13-7 lead into Sunday's singles and held on after an early U.S.A. rally.

California sophomore Collin Morikawa continued to make a name for himself this weekend in his first professional event. Morikawa fired a pair of 63's on the weekend before losing in a playoff at the Web.com Tour’s Air Capital Classic presented by Aetna.

MAJORS OF AMATEUR GOLF

Top-ranked mid-amateur Scott Harvey found himself in the winners circle once again as he won the George C. Thomas Invitational in a playoff. The senior division also went to a playoff, with 2015 U.S. Senior Amateur champion Chip Lutz winning the title.

The Rice Planters Amateur was also contested this weekend and it was rising University of Florida sophomore Philip Knowles earning the title. Knowles posted a 10-under total to win by three.

At the Greystone Invitational, University of Houston golfer Michael Perras was victorious after overcoming a three-shot deficit to start the final round.

WOMEN'S AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS

In Dayton, OH at the Women’s Western Amateur, Georgia Bulldog Jillian Hollis outlasted 15-year-old Mikhaela Fortuna in the 36-hole final.

A few states to the south it was Ohio State signee Alex Wright taking home the Women’s Southern Amateur with a 2 up win over Georgia sophomore Rinko Mitsunaga.

STATE AMATEUR'S

A handful of state amateur's were contested over the weekend as well. Some of the most notable victorious included Jacob Huizinga going wire-to-wire in Florida and Shintaro Ban winning in California.

-In Oregon the men's and women's amateur championships were contested concurrently at Black Butte Ranch with Conner Barr winning the men's title and Krissy Peterson emerging victorious in the women's draw.
-The Wyoming Amateur went to Quintin Pope for the second straight year as he won by an impressive 11-strokes.
-The match went the distance but in the end it was Sam Migdal who claimed the Missouri Amateur.
-While in the Great Lake region of the country it was Sam Weatherhead winning the Michigan State Amateur.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Across the pond that is the Atlantic Ocean 15-year-old Julia Engstrom was able to hoist the Ladies British Amateur trophy.

Also, in England Jamie Bower won the English Men’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship or Brabazon Trophy.

OTHER NEWS

-Deep in the heart of Texas it was Megan Thothong winning the Texas Women's Stroke Play Championship.
-One of the most unique events of the year is the par-3 Zigfield Troy Open, won this year by Florida golfer Kelly Grassel.
-In junior play Sean Maruyama held on and won the Western Junior title.
