Mitsunaga, Wright to face off in Women's Southern Amateur final

AUGUSTA, GA (June 23, 2016) -- The finals are set for the WSGA 101st Amateur Championship and the Second Mid-Amateur Championship being held this week at West Lake Country Club in Augusta, GA.

Facing off in the Championship match at 8:20 Friday morning will be University of Georgia sophomore Rinko Mitsunaga and Alex Wright of Midlothian, VA.

Vying to be just the second Mid-Amateur Champion will be #1 seed Medalist Laura Coble of Augusta and Janie Carpenter of Garland, TX, who has not only been playing awesome golf this week but also serving as WSGA secretary/president-elect. The Mid-Amateur Champion will be awarded the coveted Betty Probasco Championship Trophy. This match is set to get underway at 8:10 a.m.

The Championship Consolation prize will be a Georgia affair decided in a match featuring Manuela Carbajore of Athens against Lauren Waidner of Fleming Island. This match is set to begin at 8:00 a.m.

Set to get underway at 7:50 a.m. will be the Consolation Finals of the Mid-Amateur Championship. Playing in this match will be Nancy Gavin of Jacksons Gap, AL and last year’s Mid-Am finalist Anna Schultz of Heath, TX.

The Championship First Flight final will feature LSU senior Lana Hodge of Monroe, LA taking on Clara Teixeira of Miramar, FL. Match time will be 7:40 a.m.

The first match out Friday morning at 7:30 will be the Championship First Flight Consolation division. This match will pit Taylor Thompson of Baton Rouge, LA against Jaelyn Tindal of Rock Hill, S.C. Thompson’s match Thursday featured a hole-in-one on #8 in her victory over Victoria Huggins.

Also making it to the semifinals in the Championship Flight were Fernanda Lira of Mexico City, Mexico and Gabriella Coella of Venezuela.

Championship Consolation semifinalists were Elle Nachmann of Boca Raton, FL and Emily Brooks of Chapel Hill, N.C.

Championship First Flight semifinalists were Louise Olsson of Charleston, S.C. and Madison Barnett of Mableton, GA.

Semifinalists in the Mid-Amateur Championship were Tanna Richard of Ft. Smith, AR and Lin Culver of Palm Coast, FL.

Mid-Amateur Consolation semifinalists were Joan Archer of Hot Springs Village, AR and Jewel Malick of Heath, TX.

QUARTERFINALS ARE SET

Co-Medalists Janet Mao and Kathleen Gallagher both moved into the quarterfinals with their wins Wednesday morning. Mao, of Johns Creek, GA defeated Elsa Diaz while Gallagher, who hails from Greenwood, MS. downed Sarah Harris.

Joining the medalists in the next round will be No. 3 seed Rinko Mitsunaga of Roswell, GA, who beat Brenda Gonzalez in the Round of 16. Also moving on are No. 5 seed Fernanda Lira of Mexico, a winner over Ju Hee Bae, and No. 6 seed Delfina Acosta of Buenos Aires, Argentina, who defeated Eunice Yi. The other single digit seed advancing is No. 8 Alex Wright of Midlothian, VA, who bested Hannah Mae Deems in a match up of the 8 and 9 seeds.

Double-digit seeds advancing are No. 20 Amanda Doherty of Atlanta, who downed the No. 4 seed Valerie Tanguay and No. 23 seed Gabriela Coella of Venezuela,, who beat Marisa Messana.

Thursday morning match ups will have Mao taking on Wright and Doherty playing Lira in one side of the bracket. The other side will feature Gallagher playing Coello and Mitsunaga taking on Acosta.

36 holes of qualifying followed by the top 32 advancing to a match play tournament. Open and Mid-Amateur divisions. Entry is open to female amateur golfers who are members of the WSGA through a WSGA member golf club, women’s golf organization, or a college/university in one of the fifteen southern states or the District of Columbia.
