RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. (Feb. 9, 2016) -- SMU built a 5 shot lead after yesterday's first round into a whopping 28 stroke victory after Tuesday's final 36-holes to bring home a victory at the Farms Collegiate.

Competing at the challenging Farms Golf Club today, the team was paced by afternoon rounds of 4-under 68 by both Ryan Burgess (hometown Rancho Santa Fe, Calif but a member of Rancho Santa Fe CC, not The Farms) and Austin Smotherman in perfect scoring conditions -- 85 degrees and not a cloud in the sky.

After a starting par-birdie, Burgess suffered a double bogey at the No. 1 handicap hole, the challenging par-5 3rd, where a daunting downhill tee shot sets up a green guarded by a lake all the way up the right side, with no bail out to the left. He came back with six birdies and just one bogey on the way in, the bogey coming on the back nine along with four of those birdies for an amazing 32.

Even in perfect conditions, this course is no pushover as evidenced by most players struggling to shoot par.

Burgess took home medalist honors at 7-under 209 for 54-holes, while Smotherman was just two shots back at 5-under 211.
