ROCHESTER – Anthony Sorentino of Shelby Township started his day with a double-eagle 2 on the par 5 first hole of the Katke-Cousins Course at Oakland University, and then to end the day made a birdie 3 on No. 10 to win a sudden-death playoff.

The dramatic result: The 37-year-old attorney won the GAM Tournament of Champions for men Monday, capping a golf season in which he also was the GAM Mid-Amateur Champion.

It was a day for dramatics for Sorentino, whose 4-under-par 68 was matched in regulation play by Greg Davies of West Bloomfield.

The double-eagle started things. He was 5-under during the round only to make consecutive bogeys and get passed by his good friend Davies, who birdied the final three holes.

“Greg finished great, and I got lucky and made a 50-foot bomb on 18 to tie him and then won the playoff,” he said. “Crazy game. Great day. I got to play with Greg who is one of my best friends.”

Sorentino, who played college golf at Oakland University, said the double-eagle was the second of his golf career. The other one was also in competition.

“I had 220 left and hit rescue (3-iron) right at the flag,” he said. “We thought it hit the stick, and it was in.”

A switch in putting routine has keyed the strong finish to the season for Sorentino.

“I don’t take any practice strokes,” he said pointing at his head. “Then this doesn’t get involved.”

Oakland University Golf and Learning Center’s tournament-tested and world-class golf courses – Katke-Cousins and R&S Sharf – hosted the Tournament of Champions Monday for men and women.

Erin Larson won the women’s championship in what is the Golf Association of Michigan’s grand finale on the golf schedule. The field was made up of golfers who won their GAM member club championships in 2015 or won a 2015 GAM championship.

Davies took runner-up honors while defending champion Joe Hooks of Commerce Township and Wes Stewart of Windsor, Ontario, tied at 71.

Michigan Amateur champion Ryan Johnson of New Boston, Grant Mills of Royal Oak and Bill O’Connor of Birmingham each had 73s.
