John Gallacher, Len Filek share first-round lead at B.C. Senior
PITT MEADOWS, Canada — John Gallacher of Burnaby and Summerland's Len Filek share the lead at (-2) 70 after Round 1 of the British Columbia Golf Senior and Super Senior Championships at Swan-e-Set Bay Resort in Pitt Meadows. The 54-hole championship runs until Thursday, with Round 2 set to begin at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Gallacher, who won the BC Senior Men's Championship in 2007, started out with a birdie on his opening hole and added five more during his round to go with only four bogeys.

"I could have been one better, " said the Vancouver Golf Club member. "I three-putted my last hole for bogey, but I'm happy with how I played. My game is simple. Try to play the best I can by hitting it down the fairway and getting it on the green and making some putts. I had a great time out there today because I made a lot of birdies."

Filek had a completely different route to his 70, starting out fast with a (-3) 33 for his first 9 holes before making two bogeys on his back 9. Filek would finish with a birdie on his final hole to grab a share of the first-round lead.

"Par on any hole and any course is a good thing, so I'm pretty happy with breaking par and getting a birdie to finish my round," said Filek, who also made the cut at the BC Amateur at Fairview Mountain earlier this month. "I played well, especially with how I hit my long irons into greens and gave myself putts I could make."

Defending Super Senior Champion Gudmund Lindbjerg, who won 4 consecutive BC Senior Men's Championships from 2008-2011, shot a (-1) round of 71 for a third-place tie with playing partner Sandy Harper of Nanaimo, who won in 2012.

Two-time defending BC Senior Champion Doug Roxburgh shot a (+1) round of 73 to stay within three strokes of the lead, in a tie for fifth with Lance Lundy, Norm Bradley and Rob Kemp.

SUPER SENIOR COMPETITION

In the Super Senior competition for players age 65 and older, Gudmund Lindbjerg's score of (-1) 71 has him three strokes clear of second place David Finn of Nanoose Bay, who shot a (+2) round of 74.

BEST BALL COMPETITION

In the two-man Best Ball Competition, John Gallacher and Gudmund Lindbjerg shot a (-8) round of 64 to hold a four-stroke lead over three teams: Norm Bradley and Lance Lundy; Steve Berry and Doug Roxburgh; and Trevor Bradley and Sandy Harper.

ZONE TEAM COMPETITION

In the four-person Zone Team Competition, Zone 2, consisting of Norm Bradley, Jeff Omland, Russ Bentley and Len Filek shot a (+6) round of 222 to lead the 36-hole competition. Second place is the Zone 4 Lower Mainland team of Paul Batchelor, Mark Spooner, John Gallacher and Gary Ritchie at (+8) 224, two strokes behind the Interior team.
