AUSTIN, Texas (July 4, 2015) -- Alex Ellis made nine birdies and two bogies to post a seven under par 64 as a follow up to his first round 67 and grab a two shot lead headed into the final round of the 2015 Firecracker Open.

Ellis recently graduated from the College of Charleston, where he played on the golf team. But amazingly, he has not competed in a tournament in nine months. It turns out he is comfortable at Lion’s Municipal and the Firecracker Open.

For a while it looked like he would have comfortable four shot lead but Nicholas Cristea shot 31 on the back nine to post 66 to go with a first round of 67. That put him at nine under par, two shots behind Ellis.

Jay Reynolds and Alex Levy are four shots back of Ellis at seven under par. Reynolds shot 31-35=66 and Levy shot 36-32=68 in the second round.

Campbell, Henson and Hawkes are at six under par, five shots off the lead.

A RARE ALBATROSS

One shot of note was Mike Allen’s double eagle on the par five 8th hole. After a nice drive he knocked a six iron in the hole. That propelled him to four under par and he finished with 67, which happens to be his age. Congrats to making his first double eagle and shooting his age.

TWO WOMEN MAKE THE CUT

Also of note is the fact that the two female entrants, Julia Beck and Alexandra Rossi both made the cut -- Julia Beck, who plays for the UT women’s team and Alexandra Rossi of Southern Methodist University.

Logan Boatner, the defending champion struggled but posted a one under par 70 to go with a first round 67. He was not quite at full strength as he spent the previous evening proposing to his girlfriend. She said yes.
