Charlottesville, VA (7-3-2015) -- Twenty-one year-old Virginia Tech senior Maclain Huge (pronounced HU-ghee) had to feel good coming into today’s 36-hole finals feeling good. After all, he took down both last year’s and current Virginia Amateur medalists yesterday to reach the final, seemingly executing his game plan for the week at Farmington Country Club.

“Really coming in I didn’t have many expectations. I just wanted to go play and play the strategy that I had for the whole week. I figured if I executed that well it would end up a good week. I didn’t really expect much coming in. Just play good golf,” Huge told the VSGA.

Lawrence, an 18-year old soon-to-be freshman at Auburn University, also knew exactly what he wanted to do this week.

“I’ve played Farmington a few times. It doesn’t really matter how hard you try to attack it it’s going to hurt you if you attack it too hard,” he said. “You’ve got to play it a certain way. There’s a limit to how much you can take out here.”

Their plans seem simple enough, but it was Huge who had the winning formula on Friday. Lawrence took an early bogey on the 195-yard par 3 second hole, leaving him one shot behind. While he posted pars for most of the round, Huge “just play(ed) good golf” and birdied Nos. 4, 6, 7 and 9 to go 5-up through 17.

Lawrence carded a birdie on No. 18 to win the hole and chip away at the lead as they headed for their second round of the day, Huge now with a 4-up lead.

Playing the first hole for the second time, Huge birdied to move the lead to 5-up once again. Lawrence wouldn’t give up the fight, however, winning the 23rd and 26th holes (Nos. 5 and 8, respectively) to keep cutting the lead down.

Lawrence found some hope when he won the 31st hole (No. 13) to cut Huge’s lead to 2-up, but consecutive birdies from Huge on the 32nd and 33rd holes (Nos. 14 & 15) quickly dashed any hopes. Lawrence came into the tournament with quite the family legacy, where his father won the tournament in 1980 and his grandfather was runner-up in 1958.

Huge won the tournament on the 33rd hole of the day, 4 and 3, claiming his first State Amateur.
