DAVIS, California (Dec. 8, 2014) -- Former UCLA
and
NFL quarterback Drew Olson and partner David
Reneker advanced through sectional qualifying in
a
playoff at Del Paso CC on Monday to grab one of
the
available spots, firing a 6-under 65. Olson, 31, is
one
of UCLA's all-time passing leaders; Reneker, 46,
was a
member of the Bruins golf team.
After posting their score and thinking they
had
made it into the field easily (38 of 52 teams had
posted and none had scored better) Olson and
Reneker retired to the Del Paso bar and were
deep
into their second beer when they found out they
needed to lace up the shoes again.
They defeated Gary Dunn and Jon Peterson
on
the fourth playoff to gain the last spot. Olson
made
birdies to halve the first and third holes, while
Reneker sealed the deal with a 15-foot birdie on
the
fourth hole. The U.S. Four Ball will be each
player's
second USGA event -- Olson qualified for the
2013
Mid-Am while Reneker did the same in 2009.
Chico State golfers Alistair Docherty and Lee
Gearhart earned medalist honors at 8-under 63,
while Scott Colby and Gary Deblaquiere of
Granite
Bay, paired in the same late foursome as
Docherty
and Gearhart, shot 64 and also advanced.
