Waters, Subin tie for fifth at Carolina Pine Needles/Mid Pines Open

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (Oct. 29, 2014) — Doug Thompson, PGA Director of Golf at Southern Pines Golf Club, has captured the 2014 Pine Needles/Mid Pines CPGA Senior Open. The 36-hole tournament was held at Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club and Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in Southern Pines on Tuesday & Wednesday.

Thompson carded a 3-under par round of 69 at Mid Pines in the first round and an incredible 6-under par round of 65 to take the Overall Championship at Pine Needles with a 9-under total of 134. Runner-up in the Overall Championship and Professional Division went to Ed Sabo, PGA who also carded a 65 at Pine Needles, bringing his two-day total to 7-under par 136. Gus Ulrich, PGA came in third in the Overall Championship & Professional Division with a 3-under 140. Thompson, Sabo, and Ulrich are all PGA Professionals residing in the Pinehurst area.

In the Champions Division (Amateurs age 50+ from approx. 6,400 yards), there was a tie for first place between Glen Subin of Pinehurst, NC and Keith Waters of Raleigh, NC at 146. Subin took home the Overall Champions title, winning a scorecard playoff that took it to the last 6 holes of play. Kelly Miller, President of Pine Needles Lodge & GC, came in 3rd place with a 148 and won the Champions 50-55 age group. Subin won the Champions 56-60 age group, and Bob Klug of Pinehurst, NC won the Champions 61 & Up age group.

Gary Strickfaden of Southern Pines, NC won the Overall Super Seniors Division (Amateurs/Pros age 63+ from approx. 5,900 yards) with a 2-day total of 145. Spike Smith of Pinehurst, NC won the Super Seniors 63-65 age group, while John Walters of Charlotte, NC won the Super Seniors 66-67 age group. Strickfaden also won the Super Seniors 68 & Up age group with his Overall Super Seniors win.

The Legends Division (Amateurs/Pros age 70+ from approx. 5,500 yards) was won by Don Tew of Ocean Isle Beach, NC. Tew had consistent rounds of 71 & 73 for a 144 total to win the Overall Legends Division and Legends 70-73 age group by 5 shots. In the Legends 74 & Up age group, John Green of Wallace, NC took the win with 78-75=153.
