ST. ANDREWS, SCOTLAND (Sept. 23, 2014) — The Ladies’ Golf Union has appointed Elaine Farquharson-Black (right), a two-time Curtis Cup competitor, as captain of Great Britain & Ireland for the 2016 Match, to be held at Dun Laoghaire Golf Club in Ireland.

Farquharson-Black, who represented GB&I in the Curtis Cup in 1990 and 1992, will be the first Scottish-born captain since Belle Robertson in 1974 and 1976.

“We are delighted that Elaine has accepted the post of captain,” said Ladies’ Golf Union Chairman Trish Wilson. “She brings to the role a wealth of experience and already has an excellent rapport with the players, who will benefit greatly from being led by such a respected captain and proven winner.”

The Curtis Cup Match is a biennial competition between the United States and Great Britain & Ireland, contested by female amateurs, with the host site alternating between the USA and Great Britain and Ireland.

Farquharson-Black will succeed two-time captain Tegwen Matthews. Matthews, the first native of Wales to lead the side, captained GB&I to victory in 2012 in Nairn, Scotland, their first win in the Match since 1996. The USA won the most recent edition at St. Louis (Mo.) Country Club in June by a margin of 13-7.

Farquharson-Black, the runner-up in the 1989 British Ladies Open Amateur Championship, will also captain Great Britain & Ireland in a pair of international competitions in 2015, beginning with the Astor Trophy in January, followed by the Vagliano Trophy in June.

ABOUT THE Curtis Cup

Officially named "The Women's International Cup," the first Curtis Cup wasn't officially held until 1932. The biennial competition features the best female players from the United States of America pitted against a similar squad from Great Britain and Ireland. While it was hoped that many nations would eventually join the Match, the Curtis Cup has remained a two-sided competition.
