Humerickhouse, looking for fifth title, leads by two at Colorado Mid-Amateur
CARBONDALE, Colo. (Sept. 19, 2014) — Keith Humerickhouse of Glenwood Springs Golf Club took the first step toward a five-peat on Friday by shooting a 4-under-par 68 in the first round of the 28th CGA Mid-Amateur Championship at River Valley Ranch Golf Club in Carbondale.
Humerickhouse is attempting to become the first player in the 114-year history of CGA championships to win five consecutive titles in the same CGA event.
The left-handed former pro birdied the first three holes -- and seven overall for the day -- to grab a two-stroke lead after day 1 of the 54-hole tournament that's limited to players 25 and older.
Another former Mid-Amateur champion is one of Humerickhouse's closest pursuers. Jon Lindstrom of Lakewood Country Club, winner in 2008, carded four birdies in a round of 70, good for a tie for second place. Also at that figure is 2013 U.S. Amateur qualifier Christopher Thayer of Bear Creek Golf Club, who likewise recorded four birdies.
Three other players broke par on Friday and share fourth place at 71: Tristan Sanders of CommonGround Golf Course, Matt Hall of Bookcliff Country Club and Zack Neiditz of Aspen Golf Club. Sanders has qualified for the U.S. Mid-Amateur two of the last four years.
Michael Harrington of Garden of the Gods Club, who made the quarterfinals of the U.S. Mid-Amateur last week in Pennsylvania, recorded two birdies and two bogeys en route to a 72 on Friday, leaving him in a tie for seventh place. Harrington, the 2009 CGA Mid-Amateur Player of the Year, won the CGA Mid-Amateur Match Play Invitational earlier this year.
The field will be cut to the low 40 players and ties after Saturday's second round, then the championship will conclude on Sunday.
