Nathan Smith helps WPGA beat Tri-State PGA at Palmer Cup
LATROBE, Pa. (Sept. 18, 2014) — In an annual meeting between the best amateurs from the Western Pennsylvania Golf Association and the best professionals from the Tri-State PGA, The Palmer Cup matches were a close contest in 2014 at Latrobe Country Club.

Winning by a score of 9 to 8 were the amateurs of the WPGA, led by four-time U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Nathan Smith.

Smith, who recently reached the quarterfinals at the U.S. Amateur and the round of 32 at the U.S. Mid-Amateur, won his singles match 5-and-4 over Kevin Shields and paired with David Brown to defeat John Aber and Tony Traci one-up in Thursday afternoon's four-ball match.

Despite losing 4.5 to 2.5 in the four-ball matches, a three-stroke advantage in the singles matches allowed the WPGA to claim the title.

The Frank B. Fuhrer, Jr. Team that participates in the Palmer Cup consists of ten amateurs and four senior amateurs. Once a competitor for the Tri-State Section, Mr. Arnold Palmer now takes in the competition as the host of the event. The competition is thirty-six holes of match play with individual matches in the morning and four-ball in the afternoon. The Tri-State Section holds an edge in the series record.

Each September the Association's finest amateurs take on their fellow Tri-State Section, PGA of America professionals in the Palmer Cup Matches at Latrobe Country Club. The Frank B. Fuhrer, Jr. Team that participates in the Palmer Cup consists of ten amateurs and four senior amateurs. Once a competitor for the Tri-State Section, Mr. Arnold Palmer now takes in the competition as the host of the event. The competition is thirty-six holes of match play with individual matches in the morning and four-ball in the afternoon.
