OOLTEWAH, TENNESSEE (August 29, 2014) -- Ryan Greer of Knoxville, TN was in the final pairing of the 2014 Tennessee Mid-Amateur with reigning State Amateur Champion Tim Jackson of Germantown and Kevin Watford of Franklin who held a three shot lead heading into the final round over Jackson and Greer. Greer came in with confidence after his blistering 5-under par 67 in Thursday’s Second Round at The Honors Course and looked poised to compete as he teed off on Friday.

Greer and Watford would go back and forth throughout the day. Watford got off to a solid start with a birdie at the par-5 second hole, but would make the turn at even-par for the day. Two bogeys later at ten and eleven and Greer was right on his back. Greer would make the turn at 1-under par and came to the seventeenth hole one shot back of Watford. A birdie at the par-5 seventeenth meant the two were headed to the eighteenth tied at 4- under par for the week. A pair of pars at eighteen led to a playoff at the first hole where Watford had the misfortune of finding the greenside bunker. Unable to convert the par putt, Greer had earned the title of 2014 Tennessee Mid-Amateur Champion.

Jackson, who earlier this year set the record as the oldest winner of the Tennessee State Amateur at age 55 -- posted a round of 2-over par. He got into a three way tie at one point during the final round, but finished in fifth place behind Craig Smith and Matt Cooper.

ABOUT THE TENNESSEE MID- AMATEUR

The State Mid-Amateur Championship, for players 25 years and older, started in 1988. The first tournament, conducted at match-play, was won by Rob Long of Clarksville. He defeated Buzz Fly of Memphis, 3 and 2. The format was changed to stroke play in 1992 at The Golf Club of Tennessee. Germantown’s Jackson (51 years, 6 months, 16 days) became the oldest player to win the tournament when he won for a record sixth time in 2010 at Spring Creek Ranch. Jackson holds the most Mid-Amateur Championships at 6, and has the same number of State Amateur titles.

ABOUT THE GOLF ASSOCIATION

The Mid-Amateur Championship presented by Gentleman Jack is one of eighteen (18) state championships that the Tennessee Golf Association conducts annually. The objective of the Association, as stated in its Constitution, “shall be to promote the game of golf in Tennessee.” From these small origins, the TGA has become an association which now includes over 200 member clubs, courses and organizations, comprised of over 32,000 individuals from across the state.
