Lyon Lazare wins Gross Flight at World Amateur
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (August 28, 2014) — With 3,405 players broken down over 76 divisions at more than 50 different courses, there isn't a tournament like the World Amateur anywhere. And while it's known as a flighted event, this year's event was different. For the first time ever, players could enter a separate Gross Division and 50 players embraced the concept.

Lyon Lazare posted four solid rounds of 73-74- 72-75 over four uniquely challenging layouts to win by seven over Mark Gardiner of Illinois. And Lazare's victory can be considered a "title defense" because even though the World Amateur didn't have a dedicated scratch flight last year, he was the lowest gross score in the first flight, which had several really low handicap golfers.

As for Gardiner, the runner-up has been having a great summer after qualifying for the U.S. Senior Open and nearly making the US Mid Amateur as a first alternate.

Play continues Friday with the low players in each flight going up against each other in one final round to determine the overall champion. (The top three players in the Gross Division will compete in their own separate shootout.) All of the flight winners, regardless of what they shoot on Friday, will be going home with great trophies and prizes as a result of winning their flight over the first 72 holes. Sound like fun? Enter next year!
