Rosen is victorious at Texas Women's State Amateur

DALLAS, TX (August 1, 2014) — If the best preparation for winning big golf tournaments is winning other big golf tournaments, then Portland Rosen is in excellent shape headed into the most important two events in her young golf career.

The 22-year-old from Houston on Friday won the 2014 Women's State Amateur Championship with a 3-and-2 victory against The Woodlands' Kelly McGovern at the scenic and challenging Bent Tree Country Club. Rosen, the No. 4 overall seed in the Championship Flight, birdied two of her final five holes -- including a 40-foot bomb on the par-4 12th -- and closed out the match with a par on the par-5 16th.

"This is so exciting," said Portland, a recent University of Virginia graduate. "This was my first time playing in a TGA event, and everyone couldn't have been nicer. It means so much because Texas golf has helped me so much. It helped me get to college and now it's helping me beyond."

At the beginning of the long week, Rosen said her participation in the Women's State Amateur was part of her training for her next two events: the U.S. Women's Amateur (Aug. 4-10 at Nassau CC in New York), and the first stage of LPGA Tour Qualifying School (Aug. 26-29 at Mission Hills CC in California). Her dream is to play on the LPGA Tour, and her Women's State Amateur Championship is a step toward making that a reality.
