Chattanooga Choo-Choo: Nick Blakely ahead by two
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (July 29, 2014) -- Chattanooga local Nick Blakely has found himself in the lead headed into the final round of the Chattanooga Choo-Choo Invitational.
Blakely shot a second-round 68 on Tuesday at Council Fire Golf Course to post a two-round total of seven-under 137. His 68 was the lowest of the day and one of only two rounds in the 60s. He holds a two-stroke lead over the field.
His round consisted of a lone bogey on the third hole, and five birdies. He spaced his birdies out over the course of the round, converting his opportunities at the second, fifth, ninth, 13th, and 18th.
Blakely leads defending champion Ben Wolcott and first-round leader Mathew Mahle by two strokes. Wolcott followed up his first-round 66 with a one-over 73. If not for a bogey-bogey finish, Walcott would be tied for the lead. Mahle made five bogeys on his way to a 74; likely a tough blow after a strong opening round 65.
The course played close to a stroke tougher on Tuesday than it did Monday for the amateurs, with the field averaging 76.99 strokes.
Neil Spitalny leads the Senior Amateur division by two strokes as well. He fired a second round 70 for a two-round 141 total. He will face off against Chris Hall (-1, 143) in the final round, who is the only player within eight strokes of the lead.
