Caballero, Green win Tennessee Match Play titles
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (July 27, 2014) -- Brendon Caballero (UT-Martin, pictured top left) continued his brilliant performance Sunday capturing the 2014 Tennessee Match Play Championship in two thrilling matches. Caballero came in as the number one seed after 36 holes of stroke play qualifying to set up the 16 man match play bracket. Caballero made quick work of his Round of 16 and Quarterfinalist opponents winning 5&3 in each of Saturday’s matches. Sunday’s semi-final match proved to be a great bout with Caballero facing off with University of Tennessee player Michael Monroe. Eighteen holes weren’t enough to decide a winner and after heading back to Holston Hills’s first tee Caballero decided to end it quickly by making an eagle at the par-4 first. Caballero’s 150 yard hole-out set up at Final Round match with number two seed Zac Stolz (UT-Chattanooga) who defeated Matt Cooper (Memphis) in the second semi-final match.

The final match featured a great back and forth with little separation. Caballero opened the match with a birdie at the par-4 first. Stolz would answer at the fifth and take a 1 up lead at the seventh. After a birdie at the par-4 tenth and capitalizing on a Stolz slip up at the par -3 fourteenth, Caballero took a 1 up lead heading into fifteen. Caballero would give it right back at fifteen with a slip up of his own shifting the match to all square heading into the par-4 sixteenth.

Caballero made an incredible 30 foot putt at the sixteenth for birdie taking a 1 up lead to the seventeenth. Caballero would strike again leaving all in attendance applauding with another brilliant 30 foot birdie putt to wrap up the match 2&1 crowning him as the 2014 Tennessee Match Play Champion.

Number Two seed Tony Green (Kingsport) was victorious over number one seed Tim Jackson (Germantown) in the 2014 Tennessee Senior Match Play Championship. The two were back and forth all morning eventually heading into the par-5 eighteenth all square. Jackson hit a solid approach 6 feet right of the hole, but Green would answer with all but a tap in. When Jackson’s putt missed low Tony Green cleaned up his birdie and claimed the 2014 Tennessee Senior Match Play Championship.
