Finals set at Virginia Super Senior
KILMARNOCK –– Stroke play medalist Jon Abbett (McLean) will meet fellow northern Virginian Bob Albus (Ashburn) in the 65-69 age group championship final on Friday morning at the 20th Virginia State Golf Association Super Senior Amateur Championship being conducted at Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club.

Abbett, 66, got past medalist and fellow northern Virginian Bill Engel, 67, of Alexandria, 1 up in Thursday afternoon’s semifinals. Abbett was two holes down through 12 holes, but won three straight holes from Nos. 13-15, culminating the surge by knocking in a 15-footer at the par-4 15th hole. He two-putted for par from 35 feet at the par-4 18th to advance.

Albus, 67 outlasted John Cuomo (Richmond) in 20 holes in a semifinal match in which neither player held more than a 1-up lead. On the second extra hole, the par-3 second, Albus struck his tee shot to 5 feet. After Cuomo nearly holed his chip shot, Albus knocked in the short, right to left breaking putt to advance.

In the 70-74 age bracket, medalist George Owens, 70, of Virginia Beach will meet Tom Flory, 71, of Madison. Thus far, the top-seeded Owens is making quick work of his opponents, rolling to two wire-to-wire victories to open match play. He registered a 6 and 4 win in the morning before winning the first five holes of his afternoon encounter against Walter Anderson (Afton) and recording a 4 and 3 win.

In the other semifinal match in the age division, Flory scored two late par wins to post a 2-up victory over Walt Martin (Oakton). Flory found the putting surface at the par-3 16th hole and went 1 up after Martin was left in recovery mode after missing the green. At No. 18, Martin’s tee shot found a hazard and Flory won the hole to set the final margin.

The four players in the 75 and over category each played a semifinal round match on Thursday. Medalist Harry Cain of Williamsburg will meet fellow 76-year-old James Naylor (Lexington) in Friday’s final.

Cain won three of the final four holes of his round of four encounter against Wilton Burgess (Lynchburg). Naylor was two holes down to Wayne Jackson (Gloucester) through 11 holes, but didn’t lose a hole the rest of the way and won four of the final six. He finished the match with two consecutive birdies to complete the comeback. Cain claimed the 70-74 age division in 2012.
