Simi Valley City: J.J. Holen captures title
SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (June 2, 2013) -- After leading the tournament by one stroke on Saturday, J J Holen, resident of Castaic and a Long Beach State golfer, distanced himself from the field on Sunday, taking the Simi Valley City Championship by 6 strokes.

Holen scored 65 on Saturday (6 under par) and 68 on Sunday (3 under par) for a 133 total for the weekend. Second place honors went to Jonny Hogan of Solvang, with a two round total of 3 under par, 139. Tied for third place one stroke back were Jack Biwer of Westlake Village, and Tim Hogarth, Northridge.

Holen was tied for the lead after regulation play in 2012, only to lose in a play-off against James Holley, a two-time champion. For Holen, the outright win this year was payback for last year’s loss. Holen was excited to return to Simi Hills and played two great rounds against stiff competition.

Regulation rounds of the Senior Championship flight ended in a tie, leading to a sudden death playoff for first place. Dave Crawford of Camarillo, last year’s senior champion at this event, tied Robert Valerio of Hawthorne with matching two day scores of 69/75 for 144 totals. Valerio had two senior tournament wins in 2012, at the Long Beach Senior Amateur, as well as the City of Los Angeles Senior Men’s City Championship. The playoff went to the 347 yard, par 4, third hole, when Valerio’s drive put him in the middle of the fairway, around 85 yards from the pin. Crawford’s tee shot stopped 80 yards from the pin, near the cart path, requiring a drop. After taking the drop, Crawford stuck his ball 5 inches from the hole, assuring birdie on the hole. Valerio missed his four foot birdie putt, paring the hole and conceding the playoff. Crawford succeeded in defending his title from 2012 in grand fashion.

In the “A” flight, the gross score champion was Eugene Lai of Costa Mesa, who shot 10 over par 152 in two rounds. Raffi Bashian of Sherman Oaks took second place honors with two day totals of 154, and Ron McCarthy of West Hills scored 13 over par, 155, good for third place honors.

In the “A” flight net score competition, there was a tie for first place at two under par, 140. The tie was held by Evan Kay of Simi Valley and Ava Lourenco of Tillare. Tied for third place, with net scores of one over par 141, were John Kenyon of Simi Valley and Keith Rosenberger of Northridge.

In the “B” flight, Mitch Alberi of Chatsworth won first place in the gross score competition with a two round total score of 20 over par, 162, with Tom Cammalleri of Simi Valley taking second place at 167. Third place honors went to John McGloughlin of Santa Paula, with a score of 168.

The “B” flight net score competition ended in a three way tie for first place at one under par, 141. That score was posted by Alan Chien of Vista, CA, Malik Basurto of Northridge, and Tony Zank of Sim Valley.

In the Senior A flight, John Larsen of Woodland Hills shot 157, or 15 strokes over par, taking the gross score championship by one stroke over Randy Foster of Camarillo. The Senior A flight net score winner was Lee Hammerquist of Moorpark, with a two-day net score of 136, or 6 strokes under par, winning by two strokes over Robert Yates of Simi Valley. While most golfers just dream of shooting their age, Hammerquist managed to shoot his age on Saturday, with a gross score of 80 and bested it by 2 strokes on Sunday, with a score of 78. It was a remarkable and noteworthy feat.
