Saladino wins Travis Invitational

Joe Saladino rallied from 2 down with 2 to play and beat Mike Miller by draining a 50-footer on the 21st hole to defend his title on a wet and wild final day

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (May 19, 2013) -- Joe Saladino buried a 50-foot putt on the 21st hole of the championship match, defeating Mike Miller, the No. 9 player in the U.S., to win the Travis Invitational for the second straight year. The two-time MET Player of the Year was two holes down with two to play but made par on No. 18 at Garden City Golf Club to extend the match. Miller and Saladino tied for medalist prior to the start of the 16-man match play portion of the event, which honors Walter Travis, the three-time U.S. Amateur champion and the first American to win the British Amateur. Saladino and Miller, the two-time reigning MET Player of the Year, were of course teammates on the winning squad at the U.S. Men's State Team Championship last year. Saladino, who is fresh off a win last week at the Havemeyer Invitational, defeated Arthur Starrs, Stephen Summers and Allan Small to advance to the championship match. Miller knocked off Brett Williams, David Hayes and Brad Wilder to move on. Timothy Spitz won the event's Devereux Emmet Cup, defeating Ed Gibstein in tbe final match. Michael Castleforte prevailed for the Charles B. Macdonald Cup. He defeated Patrick Pierson 4-and-3 for the title. Matthew Mayer, Steve White and Jay Blumenfeld also took home titles.
