Two players have already made aces this week at Bandon Dunes Resort in Oregon.
BANDON, Oregon (May 5, 2013) -- Cinco de Mayo wound up as Cinco de Uno for Steven Bobus during the first round of the amateurgolf.com Two Man Links Championship. An easy winner of the "shot-of-the-day" compeititon that takes place each day, Steven Bobus made a hole-in-one on the 170-yard 8th hole, a downhill par-3 with a huge redan green.
The hole is fitting on a course that's name and design stems from a reverence of some of C.B. Macdonald's famous courses like National Golf Links of America on Long Island (which will host the Walker Cup in September). Macdonald loved the redan green, sloping front-to-back and right-to-left with a bunker in the front left.
Bobus hit a 9-wood (could it have been an old "Divine Nine"?) for a one-net zero. He was getting a stroke in the Net Division, which made partner Ed Ruiz very happy. The two posted 1-over par 72 on the day, five behind leaders Dieter Dammeier and Chris Lawton (67). A stroke back is the father/son team from Savannah, Gary and Scott Friend. Three teams are tied at Net 70. One of those teams, George Stevens, Jr. and his son Michael, is looking for their third title. George Stevens, Jr. recently won a lifetime achievement Academy Award.
"The old man got around pretty good today, said the younger Stevens.
"He made two nice birdies for net eagles."
In the Championship Division, the lead belongs to another father/son team - Bill and Alec Tahy. The younger Tahy, Alec, is a high school senior who missed his prom to attend the event with his dad. He made four solid birdies on his first tour of Old Mac, while his father posted a beautiful 2 on the par-3 second hole and saved par in some other key spots. In the fall, Alec will attend the University of Arkansas on a golf scholarship.
A stroke behind in second is Al Longfield and Christopher Rose from the San Francisco Bay Area, at 71.
In the Senior Division, first time contestants Hollis Gieger and Grantland Rice III are in the lead after posting a 76. Second round play begins Monday at Pacific Dunes.
TOURNAMENT NOTES:
* In addition to today's ace, Chris Lawton of Corona, Calif. holed a 120-yard ace Friday before the tournament on the 13-hole Bandon Preserve, a par-3 layout that opened last year. Straight into an afternoon wind, he carved a 7-iron that landed two feet right and drifted sideways into the cup.
* Who turned on the air conditioner at 11am?Jay Czarnecki of Pennsylvania hit the lone tree at Old Macdonald with his tee shot on the third; from that point on the temperature went from 72 to 52 (or lower) in the fastest change of weather many of the players had ever seen.
"The guys in my group say I woke up some ancient spirits or something, when the gust of smoke puffed out of the tree."
