Argentine Amateur: Ferrer, Villanueva win titles
Victoria Villanueva
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (Nov. 18, 2012) -- Antoni Ferrer of Spain topped Joshua Munn, 5-and-3, Sunday in the Championship Match of the 2012 Argentine Amateur Championship.
In the Women's Championship, Maria Victoria Villanueva defeated Delfina Acosta, 1-up, in a thrilling 36-hole finale.
Ferrer, the first Spaniard to win the Argentine Amateur, found himself trailing early in the men's final. After winning on No. 8 during the morning round, he went on a run and stayed 2-up through the remainder of the first 18. He stretched his lead in the afternoon round with wins on Nos. 24, 27 and 32 before closing out the New Zealander Munn.
The women's champion won the Argentine Ladies Open in 2006 and brought a wealth of experience into the finale against the youthful Acosta.
In the first nine holes, Villanueva played bogey-free golf and took a 4-up lead into the back nine in the morning round. The lead reached as high as 6-up on No. 12.
Acosta came roaring back, however. She won Nos. 17 and 18 in the morning round to gain a bit of momentum.
Acosta's momentum continued on Nos. 27, 30 and 31 before Villanueva stopped the bleeding and managed a 1-up victory with more stellar play.
