Kuehn leads Canadian Women's Senior
PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND (Aug. 21, 2012) -- Lynn Kuehn of Lacombe, Alta. leads the 2012 Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Senior Championship after the first round of competition at Belvedere Golf Club in Charlottetown, P.E.I.

Kuehn shot a 4-under par 70 on the day to give her a three-shot lead going into the second round. With no bogeys and four birdies, Kuehn managed to score lower than she has ever shot in a tournament before.

“I basically hit a lot of fairways and got on the greens and my putter was hot, hot, hot,” said Kuehn.

“This is the lowest [score] I’ve ever had in a tournament, but things were just going so easy.”

Kuehn finished in 29th place at last year’s Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Senior Championship, and in 2010 she ended up in 18th spot for the tournament. Late last month, Kuehn also finished in fourth place at the Alberta Senior Ladies Golf Championship.

Allyson Harrison of Kingston, Ont. currently sits in second place at 1-under par 73, thanks to four birdies, one bogey and a double bogey on Hole No. 4.

In a three-way tie for third place are defending champion Mary Ann Hayward of Aurora, Ont., 2003 Canadian Women’s Senior champion Lynda Palahniuk of Kelowna, B.C., and Terrill Samuel of Etobicoke, Ont. The trio sits at even-par 74 on the day.

Connie Walker of Fall River, N.S., who scored a hole-in-one on the par 3 No. 11 today, now sits in a tie for 17th position.

Palahniuk currently leads the Super Senior division (60+ years), and she sits four shots ahead of defending Super Senior champion Alison Murdoch of Victoria, B.C. Murdoch shot a 4-over par 78 on the day, which puts her one shot ahead of a three-way tie for third place in the division.

In the Inter-Provincial Team Championship, Team Alberta leads by two shots over defending champions Team Ontario. Team Alberta consists of Kuehn, as well as Joan Wilson of Calgary and Linda Sharpe of Fort Saskatchewan, while Team Ontario is made up of Hayward, Gail Pimm of Uxbridge, and Ivy Steinberg of Stouffville. The winning team in the Inter-Provincial Team Championship will be decided after 36 holes at the end of the second round of competition on Wednesday, August 22.

The individual winner of the 2012 Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Senior Championship will receive an exemption into the 2012 USGA Women’s Senior Amateur Championship, which will take place in Hershey, Penn. from September 8-13.

The second round of the 2012 Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Senior Championship tees off on Wednesday, August 22nd at 7:30am ADT.
