Gilbert takes lead at Texas North Amateur
EULESS, Texas (Aug. 11, 2012) -– Unusually cooler temperatures and the slightest of breezes welcomed players during the second round of the North Amateur Championship which is being held at Texas Star Golf Course. In what many claimed as ideal scoring conditions, many players found themselves back-peddling down the leaderboard heading into tomorrow’s final round. Just ten players find themselves under par as they head into Sunday chasing down second round leader Chris Gilbert of McKinney.

Gilbert, co-leader after round one, started his round with five straight pars before carding his only bogey of the day on the par 4, sixth. Erasing the bogey quickly, Gilbert made a birdie on the following hole giving him a front nine total of even par, 35. Unaware of what the field was doing, Gilbert quickly took control of his round with birdies on holes #10 and #12 before finishing with back to back birdies on holes #17 and #18. His four birdies on the back nine propelled him up the leaderboard as he posts a two day total of nine under par, 133.

Fellow round one co-leader, Charlie Ewing, didn’t fair quite as well as Gilbert but still posted a great second round score. Ewing started his round with three straight pars before carding a costly double bogey on the fourth. Staying calm, Ewing quickly erased the double with two birdies on holes #7 and #9. A birdie on the par five tenth and a bogey on the thirteenth gave Ewing a second round score of even par, 71. His two day total of 137 places him four shots back of Gilbert heading into tomorrow’s final round.

John Bearrie of Arlington and Hunter Brown of Richardson sit tied for third after both posting rounds of 69 and 70 to start the event. Four players are currently in a tie for fifth at two under par and find themselves seven shots back heading into Sunday.
