Team Virginia posts a wire-to-wire 11-stroke victory at the 4th Mid-Atlantic Junior Invitational
RADFORD, Va. –– The eight-golfer Virginia team posted a wire-to-wire 11-stroke victory at the 4th Mid-Atlantic Junior Invitational on Friday at The Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech.
Virginia, representing the Virginia State Golf Association, notched its first win in the brief history of the event. Comprised of an eight-count-six format, Virginia posted a 56-over 920 aggregate (463-457) in the one day, 36-hole event. Three-time champion Maryland, representing the Maryland State Golf Association, finished second (67-over 931, 468-463). West Virginia, representing the West Virginia Golf Association, was third (95-over 959, 476-483).
For Virginia, local player Ryan Mondy, 18, of Blacksburg (pictured left, photo by Wendell Jones), led the way, firing an event-best even-par 72 in the afternoon session to share individual medalist honors at 6-over 150. Northern Virginian Maclain Huge, 18, of Lovetsville posted back-to-back rounds of 76 (8-over 152). Both Mondy and Huge are bound for Virginia Tech in the fall of 2012 on golf scholarships.
For Maryland, David Long (Catonsville, Md.) led the way, shooting 8-over 152 (77-75), while Tyler Herriott (Brandywine, Md.) completed play at 9-over 153 (77-76). On the West Virginia side, William Evans (Charleston, W.Va.) shared individual medalist honors in the event with a 6-over 150 (74-76) total.
Virginia got off to a strong start and owned a five-stroke lead after the morning session over their next-nearest pursuer in Maryland. Four Virginians shot scores of 77 or better, including Griffin Clark (South Chesterfield, Va.) and Huge, who each returned morning-best scores of 76. Northern Virginian Ryan Douglass (Leesburg, Va.) and Hampton Roads area golfer Alex Lloyd (Virginia Beach, Va.) added scores of 77.
For Maryland, Herriottand and Long each carded scores of 77 in the morning round to keep the team within striking distance.
Virginia’s depth proved to be the difference as six players carded rounds in the 70s after lunch, led by Mondy’s even-par total. Also accounting for scores toward the team aggregate in the afternoon were reigning VSGA Junior Match Play champion Adam Ball, 18, of Richmond (74), Huge (76), fellow Richmonder Mark Lawrence Jr. (77), as well as Lloyd and Korey Watts, 17, of Buchanan, who each returned rounds of 79.
Maryland had three players return scores of 77 or better in afternoon play in Long (75), Herriott (76), Jon Carr of Rockville, Md., (73, 154) and Connor Flach of Ellicott City, Md., (77, 156).
In addition to Evans’ team-best score for West Virginia, the team received a 36-hole total of 15-over 159 (78-81) from George Hamrick (Red House, W.Va.).
VSGA board members Gary Beck of Virginia Beach, Va., and Grover Walker of Great Falls, Va., co-captained this year’s Virginia squad.
