Virginia Super Sr.: Owens, 68, medals
HOT SPRINGS, Va. (July 10, 2012) –– Division defending champion George Owens, 68, of Virginia Beach shot a second round 3-over 73 to earn medalist honors in the 65-69 age division (6,172 yards) as stroke play qualifying concluded today at the 18th Virginia State Golf Association Super Senior Amateur Championship being conducted at The Homestead’s Cascades Course.

Owens (pictured right) completed qualifying at 8-over-par 148 to earn low qualifying honors for match play which begins on Wednesday. Northern Virginian David Stewart, 68, of McLean shot a qualifying-best even-par 70 in the division and is the second low qualifier for match play (9-over 149). Event rookie Bill Engel of Alexandria (74—150), former VSGA Senior Amateur champion Tom Flory, 69, of Madison (153, 75-78) and central Virginian Jim Hudson, 66, of Midlothian (154, 76-78) filled the top five spots for match play.

In the 70-74 age bracket (5,768 yards), Homestead member Jack Vardaman, 72, of Hot Springs continued his strong play, carding a second day 73 to claim qualifying medalist honors in the division at 3-over 143. Oakton’s Walt Martin, 71, returned his second straight round of 73 and was the second low qualifier. Lou Moelchert, 70, of Richmond (148, 73-75), former VSGA Senior Amateur champion and northern Virginian David King, 70, of Potomac Falls (150, 71-79) and James Naylor, 74, of Lexington (151, 72-79) completed the top five low qualifiers for match play. Also advancing to match play was age division defending champion Harry Cain, 74, of Williamsburg, who registered back-to-back rounds of 76.

In the 75 and over category, also playing 5,768 yards, William Stallings, 76, of McLean posted a second round 1-over 71, accounting for the low score in the age division; he finished qualifying at 10-over 150. Ken Newlin, 76, of Nokesville (152), Bob Moyers, 76 of New Market (76—155) and local Bill Shrader, 79, of Roanoke, who bettered his age by three strokes with a second round 76 (157 aggregate) were the match play qualifiers in the age bracket.

Following Wednesday’s second round of stroke play qualifying, eight players qualified for the match play field in both the 65-69 and 70-74 age divisions, while four players made match play in the 75 and over division.

Match play qualifiers in the 65-69 and 70-74 age groups will play first and quarterfinal round matches on Wednesday, July 11, followed by semifinal and final round matches on Thursday, July 12. Golfers making match play in the 75 and over division will play one match on Wednesday and the final on Thursday. Players will only compete with those in their age group.

ABOUT THE Virginia Mid-Senior & Super Senior

36 holes of stroke play qualifying (18 holes per day); the low 8 players advance to match play. The Mid-Senior field is for players aged 60-64, and the Super Senior field is divided into three age groups (65+, 70+ and 75+). Players will only compete against those in their age group. Open to VSGA members who hold an active GHIN number issued by a licensed VSGA Member Club in good standing.
