KERVILLE, Tex. (July 6, 2012) -- Blue skies and
the occasional breeze welcomed the field for
the first round of the 2012 Father-Son
Championship at Club at Comanche Trace in
Kerrville. This is the first time for the Father-
Son to journey to Comanche Trace, a familiar
site, having hosted six previous state
championships. Three teams, including three-
time champions Steve and Brett Gill, are tied
for the lead in the Championship flight with an
opening round 6-under 66.
The Gill duo, of Sugar Land, played consistent
gross four-ball golf with three birdies on the
front nine, with Brett contributing two of those
birdies en route to 3-under 33. Steve caught
fire on the back nine with the team’s three
birdies for their second 3-under 33 for a first
round score of 6-under 66. Dave and Tom
Moore, of San Antonio, recorded four birdies on
their front nine to turn at 4-under 32. Three
more birdies were accounted for on their back
nine, only to have one offset by a bogey on
the par three 17th hole before closing out with
one last par for a 6-under par 66 (32-34).
The final team tied atop the Championship
flight leader board after round one at 6-under
par is Matt and Scott Van Zandt, of Houston
and Missouri City respectively. The Van
Zandts quickly found the birdie train with five
birdies in their first seven holes. A lone bogey
on the par three 3rd hole was their only
blemish as they turned at 4-under 32. Two
more birdies, including one on the par five 18th
hole, moved the Van Zandts into the three-
way tie after round one. Eight teams sit one
stroke off of the lead at 5-under 67.
The Hogan flight has three teams tied at a net
four-ball score of 9-under par 63. Those tied
for the lead are the Cliftons, from the Austin
area, the Houstons, of Midland, and the
Baileys, of Houston. The Nelson flight saw the
Maurers, from the Dallas area, fire a net four-
ball score of 11-under par 61. Two shots back
of the Maurers is Georgetown’s Scully duo at
9-under par 63.
Two teams, the Fowlers and the Millers, raced
to the top of the Crenshaw flight with opening
rounds of net four-ball 12-under par 60. The
Kite flight witnessed a net four-ball score of
14-under par 58, recorded by Jimmy and Ron
Hill, which was the lowest of all net scores.
