WHEATON, Ill. (June 27, 2012) -- Nicholas Grubnich carded the best round of the day, a 70, to finish the 36-hole stroke play qualifying at 3-under par 141, tying with Andrew Gabelman and Dave Ryan for medalist honors at the 93rd CDGA Amateur Championship at Cantigny Golf in Wheaton, Ill.
Mike Cushing defeated Brian Bullington in a four-hole playoff for the 16th and final spot, as each player tied at 4-over par after rounds of 71 and 77. First round leader Sam Bettinardi shot an 86 on Wednesday, falling out of contention for the match play field.
First round matches began shortly after 2 p.m. on Wednesday, with the winners of those matches advancing to Thursday's quarterfinals.
