WOOD RIVER, Illinois (June 9, 2012) --Scoring conditions were near perfect Saturday for the 1st round of the 9th East Side Amateur at Belk Park Golf Course. Belk Park is hosting the East Side for the 8th consecutive year and many players commented it was the best condition they have ever seen it.
A trio of 4-under 68s lead the way after round one. Dane Gray (St. Clair CC), Thomas Wuennenberg (Tapawingo National GL) and Matt McKiernan (Metropolitan GC) each fired rounds of 68 to take lead.
One shot back is 2011 Senior Player of the Year Jeff Johnson (Bogey Hills CC) and another St. Clair CC member, Josh Phillips at 3-under. Six other golfers fired subpar rounds on the day.
Even par was the popular score though, eleven competitors finished at even par 72 going into round two Sunday. Defending Champion Phil Caravia (St. Clair CC) posted a 74 to finds himself T-34 after his opening round.
The final round will be played Sunday, will we see a fresh new face atop the leaderboard on Sunday? Or will a Sunday charge by an area stalwart claim the title and ever important Player of the Year points.
